FAQs

Who is invited to attend?
Faculty and interested professionals: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, and pharmacists. A select group of BYU students will also be invited to attend. Interested students should apply.

Must I be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to attend?
No. Though there will be a special focus on how the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bring light to questions in bioethics, people of all faiths are welcome!

Are BYU students invited to attend?
Yes. A select number of BYU students interested in medicine and questions in bioethics will attend as student representatives. The students are invited as full participants in the small group discussions. Interested BYU students should apply here.

Who is the sponsor of this conference?
The Sorensen Center for Moral and Ethical Leadership is hosting the conference, with faculty support from the BYU Department of Philosophy and the College of Nursing.

What is the format of the conference?
Plan for a participatory experience, meeting in small groups with other professionals to discuss cases in bioethics. We will reconvene in plenary sessions to discuss our small group findings. Dr. Samuel Brown, ICU physician, medical researcher and author will offer the keynote address.

How can I submit an anonymized case study to be considered for discussion at the conference?
Email Angela Wentz Faulconer at Wentz@byu.edu for submission guidelines.

How should I prepare for the conference?
Extensive preparation is not required. However, for those interested, we will begin posting study materials and short cases for discussion in July. You will want to look over the cases before the conference so that you can spend more of the time in the small group sessions talking and less time reading!

What is my time commitment for this conference? Would it make sense to attend for just part of the day?
The conference will be a full day 9 am-8 p.m. All participants are encouraged to attend the full day—you don’t want to miss any part of this! However, if you aren’t able to attend the full day, be sure to mark this on your registration form so that we don’t reserve your spot in small group session that you won’t be able to participate in.

Will I be able to earn continuing medical education credits?
Yes. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Utah Medical Association through the joint providership of the UMA Foundation and Brigham Young University. The UMA Foundation is accredited by the Utah Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The UMA Foundation designates this live activity for a maximum of [6] AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other professionals will be awarded CME credit that they may be able to use for recredentialing purposes as well.

Will meals be provided? Should I plan for dinner at BYU?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served. Be sure to stay for dinner at the end of the conference as we anticipate this to be a highlight as we wrap the day up with conversation about insights gained. If you have dietary restrictions, please indicate that in your registration so that we can accommodate your needs.

Where is the Hinckley Center on the BYU campus?
Find the Hinckley Center on Google Maps

What are my best options for parking?
There will be parking spaces reserved in the parking lot across from the Hinckley Center, indicated by cones and a sign. If this space is full, the visitor parking lot by the Museum of Art will be utilized for overflow parking. Check back to this page closer to the conference for maps and more details.
